Both the Microsoft Surface Laptop and 2017 Surface Pro are aimed at the the just-announced 2017 MacBook Pro 13. So, which delivers the best bang for the buck?

Even if you’re partial to the MacBook and macOS, both the Surface Laptop and 2017 Surface Pro offer a high-quality Windows alternative.

A popular (likely) configuration for the 13-inch MacBook Pro is $1,299 with Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB of SSD storage (non Touch Bar). That jumps to $1,499 with 256GB SSD (non Touch Bar).

The Surface Laptop is $1,299 with Core i5, 8GB, and 256GB SSD.  The Surface Pro is $1,299 with Core i5, 8GB, and 256GB SSD plus $159.99 for the Surface Pro Signature Type Cover.

MacBook Pro 13:  3.02 pounds, 0.59 inches thick.

Surface Laptop:  2.76 lbs starting weight (Core i7 version slightly heavier), 0.57 inches thick.

Note that both the MacBook Pro and Surface Laptop are very similar in overall dimensions and there is only millimeters of difference in tallness and width (the Surface Laptop is slightly bigger overall — and has a larger display — though it weighs less).
