A baby ripped from its dead mother’s womb has reportedly opened his eyes for the first time.

Yadiel Yovany Lopez still, however, remains in grave condition at a Chicago-area hospital, TV station WOAI reports. Doctors believe he went without oxygen for a period of time after his mother, Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, was murdered.

Chicago police say Ochoa-Lopez, 19, was lured to a home after seeing a Facebook ad promising free baby clothing. Three people — Clarisa Figueroa, Desiree Figueroa and Piotr Bobak— have been charged in the murder, TV station WGN says. A judge ordered them held without bond at a hearing Friday.

Ochoa-Lopez’s body was discovered in a trash bin last week. Police say Clarisa Figueroa and Desiree Figueroa strangled the teen with a coaxial cable before cutting her 9-month-old baby out of the womb. A short time later, Clarisa Figueroa reportedly ran out of the residence, claiming she’d just given birth and that the baby wasn’t breathing, WGN reports.

Neighbors called for paramedics. Figueroa’s story, however, soon unraveled as police began investigating.
