WTHS holds first of 10 laptop distributions for students – NJ.com

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Class of 2017 completed their first activity as members of the senior class on Tuesday, kicking off Washington Township High School’s one-to-one laptop initiative and checking in on the first of 10 distribution days scheduled for July and August.

The long-awaited one-to-one initiative brings Dell laptop computers to approximately 2,300 students beginning in the fall. Over the course of the next three weeks, the students will make their way to the school to receive those laptops. On July 26, it was seniors whose last names begin with A-D (morning) and E-K (afternoon).

After showing their identification in the lobby of the school’s Core building, the students could either purchase optional insurance on the machines, or make their way into the Investors Bank Performing Arts Center (IBPAC), where a short movie provided an overview on the initiative. Once they finished the movie, they were escorted to the Instructional Media Center to receive the laptops.

Several stations were set up for distribution, and students had to provide their lunch access code and student ID before they were given a laptop. They then had to make sure their login information was correct before receiving a charger and carrying case. A barcoded label was tacked to the bottom of the laptop, and the students were dismissed.

District technology department staff were on hand manning all the stations and providing mobile support as needed. A specific table for troubleshooting handled any login or software issues.

A good crowd of parents attended an informational meeting on Monday night in the IBPAC. The meeting, hosted by high school administration and members of the technology staff, provided an overview of the initiative, including tips for caring for the laptop, expectations of digital citizenship and the availability of optional insurance coverage.

“Parents had a lot of very good questions, and it was a productive night,” District computer technician and workstation specialist Cathy Boyle said.

Parents and students can access comprehensive information on the initiative on the District website (www.wtps.org) by going to the high school page and clicking on the “one to one initiative” under the student link.

“We are hopeful these new laptops will enhance the personal learning experience of every student throughout their high school career,” WTHS Principal Ann Moore said.
