Upaid workers livid as Cllrs get laptops – New Zimbabwe.com

MARONDERA: Workers at the town council who have gone for months without receiving their salaries are up in arms after management splashed over $5,000 on laptops for its 12 councillors.

The workers are querying the logic behind the purchase of the laptops when they are yet to receive their outstanding salaries and when service delivery in the farming town is at an all- time low.

Councillors were each handed the HP laptops on 25 August during a full council meeting at the council chambers.

In June this year, the same council forked out over $12,000 towards a one day strategic workshop for councillors.

“The management and the councillors are showing that they do not have the plight of the workers at heart.

“Worse still, they do not care about service delivery as they are prioritising the welfare of the councillors when refuse is not being collected,” one of the affected workers said this week.

Chairperson of Marondera Progressive Residents’ Association, Goldman Mujoma weighed in, saying the councillors were not entitled to the laptops.

He said instead the council was trying to cause divisions between the councillors; the residents and workers.

Mujoma also accused the council management of spending most of their time attending workshops instead of doing their work.

“The whole of last week I was battling to locate the town clerk and the chamber secretary but failed as they were said to be attending workshops.

“The council is now being run by junior officers while senior officials pursue their personal business, said Mujoma.

However, the councillors feel that they deserve the laptops and they are unhappy that their gadgets were late as they were supposed to have received them last year.

“In fact there is a council resolution to that effect which was also approved by the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe, a councillor who spoke on condition of anonymity said.
