Microsoft Adds Surface Laptop SKU With Core i7 Kaby Lake CPU, 16GB RAM And 1TB SSD – Hot Hardware
To be more specific, you can now head to the online Microsoft Store and configure a Surface Laptop with a Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB solid state drive. The top-end setup is only available in the Platinum color option and not the newer Graphite Gold, Burgundy, or Cobalt Blue color choices. It is priced at $2,699 in the United States and £2,699 in the United Kingdom.
Pricing for the Surface Laptop is on par with the Surface Pro, which is also available with an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD for $2,699. That said, there is perhaps a bit more value to the Surface Laptop, as it comes with a detachable keyboard. With the Surface Pro, adding a keyboard accessory costs another $130 for a standard Type Cover, or $160 for a version that includes a fingerprint sensor.
Of course, it is not an apples to apples comparison. The Surface Laptop sports a 13.5-inch display with a 2256×1504 resolution (201 pixels per inch), whereas the Surface Pro wields a smaller 12.3-inch display with a higher 2736×1824 resolution (267 pixels per inch). Other notable differences include the following:
- Surface Pro: Magnesium allow, 5MP front camera, 8MP rear camera, microSD card slot, up to 13.5 hours
- Surface Laptop: Aluminum, 720p webcam, up to 14.5 hours
On the software side, the other difference is the operating system. Surface Pro systems ship with a full version of Windows 10 Pro, where as Surface Laptops come with Windows S (though Microsoft is letting users upgrade to Windows 10 Pro at no cost until December 31, 2017).
