A man has been arrested after five bicycles and 13 laptops were found in a van stopped on the hard shoulder of the M1 motorway.

The bicycles and laptops are believed to be stolen property.

Another bicycle was found on the motorway embankment near the parked van.

The man, who is in his mid-30s, was taken to Balbriggan Garda Station where he has been charged.

The discovery was made as apart of a “multi-agency operation … targeted at disrupting organised criminals who use the motorway network.”

Ten other people were arrested during the operation, which involved six checkpoints.

Nine were arrested for drink-driving offences, while one person was arrested for a public order offence.

Gardaí also seized 12 vehicles for road traffic offences, while one person was detected operating a taxi without a valid small public service vehicle driver licence.

The operation took place between 2am and 7am on Sunday 19 February.
