Xiaomi’s long-rumored laptop is expected to launch next year, and a new report claims to reveal a bit more about the device. According to NotebookCheck, the 15.6-inch laptop will run an older processor in an effort to keep costs down.
The report suggests that Xiaomi will opt for Intel’s Haswell Core i7 instead of a newer Skylake processor. The rumored laptop may also pack an older NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M graphics chip, a 1080p display, 8GB of RAM and Linux. As for the price, it should come in at under 3000 yuan (roughly $464).
Alongside this 15.6-inch model, Xiaomi is also apparently planning smaller options 12.5-inch and 13.3-inch laptops. We assume these will be even cheaper, though it’s unclear exactly how low the price might go.
Of course there are plenty of Chromebooks and Windows laptops already available for even less than the aforementioned price. Xiaomi’s biggest advantage will likely be its own ecosystem of smartphones, tablets, wearables and connected home appliances. If the company can integrate its laptop with those other products, it could take on the cheaper competition… and maybe even Apple, too.
