RIP Brangelina: Other classic Hollywood romances that ended – USA TODAY
USA TODAY confirms Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. They have six kids together.
The book on Hollywood’s most famous modern relationship has closed.
On Tuesday, news broke that Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. For 12 years, the Hollywood darlings courted the public’s attention, always staying just slightly out of reach in a way that called to mind the mythos of old Hollywood love affairs.
In the wake of their split, we look back on other storied romances that came to an end.
1. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Taylor may have been married eight times but she loved fellow actor Richard Burton so much that she gave him two shots. The stars first met on the set of 1963’s Cleopatra, where they came to know one another better than their lines. The lovers eventually divorced their spouses and married each other in March 1964. They split after 10 years and remarried in 1975 before finally divorcing for good in 1976.
2. Cher and Sonny BonoÂ
Turns out things weren’t so sunny with these two. After 13 years, one child, a classic hit and two TV series together, Sonny and Cher split in 1975. Cher later shared that she felt more like a “golden goose” than a wife to her late ex-husband.
3. Heidi Klum and Seal
The model-businesswoman and soulful singer-songwriter tied the knot in 2005 and were married for seven years before announcing their split in 2012. But It’s Alright as the two continue to co-parent their children â 12-year-old Helene, Klum’s daughter whom Seal adopted, 11-year-old Henry, 9-year-old Johan and 6-year-old Lou.
4. Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley
Once heralded as one of the more rock-solid couples in rock, the supermodel and musician famously wed in March 1985 and were together for nine years. But even after their 1994 divorce, the pair continued to be perfect models on how to handle splits.
“We had Alexa together and we knew that was going to bind us together for life so we wanted to make our divorce work,” Brinkley toldThe Wendy Williams Show host Wendy Williams back in November. “Of course as you’re going through it, you know, you can get a little bit raw, but you cannot find him saying a bad word about me or me saying a bad word about him, no matter what happens.”
5. Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter
Hollywood’s most lovable eccentrics, Burton and Bonham Carter first got to know each other while shooting the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes. They dated for 13 years, during which they gave us such Burton-esque works as Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. They also had two children together, Billy, 12, and Nell, 8. Though Bonham Carter referred to the end of their relationship as “bewildering,” the two are still friendly with Bonham Carter reprising her role as Iracebeth, the Red Queen in 2016’s Alice Through the Looking Glass (which maybe wasn’t her best move since critics panned it).
