A suspect who fatally shot a Memphis, Tennessee, police officer during an apparent traffic stop is still on the loose, police director Toney Armstrong said Saturday night.
Armstrong said the officer — who hasn’t been named yet — was shot multiple times by the person in the stopped vehicle, taken to a hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
The 9:18 p.m. call came in from a citizen who used a police radio, Armstrong said, according to WMC-TV.
Memphis Mayor A C Wharton remarked that there are “so many guns on our streets in the wrong hands, that’s the key,” adding that criminals have “no rules of engagement.”
Police haven’t released a description of the gunman.
