Donald Trump: ‘McCain Has Abandoned Our Veterans. I Will Fight For Them’ – TIME
Despite calls for an apology and even for his resignation from the presidential race, Donald Trump has doubled down on his attacks against Senator John McCain, this time in an inflammatory op-ed published July 19 in USA Today.
Trump — who has made headlines in past weeks first for saying many Mexican immigrants are “rapists;” then for his claim that “the illegals come in, and the illegals kill their children;” and finally for disparaging remarks regarding McCain’s capture in Vietnam (“I like people who weren’t captured,”) — continues his wave of controversial statements with a tirade against the veteran medical system and McCain himself.
“McCain has abandoned our veterans,” he writes. “I will fight for them.” He goes on to disparage veteran hospitals as “outdated dumps” and the veteran medical system as a “disaster.” A Trump administration, he promises, “will provide the finest universal access health care for our veterans. They will be able to get the best care anytime and anywhere.”
The op-ed also highlights Trump’s history of financial involvement in veteran affairs and lashes out at his Republican competitors, many of whom took to Twitter to publicly condemn his comments about McCain. “I do not need to be lectured by any of them,” he writes.
