“I don’t know anything about what you’re even talking about with white supremacy or white supremacists,” Trump told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “So I don’t know. I don’t know — did he endorse me, or what’s going on? Because I know nothing about David Duke; I know nothing about white supremacists.”

Trump, who later blamed the incident on a faulty earpiece, pointed to a press conference Friday in which he disavowed Duke and reiterated that he did not want white supremacists’ support. Christie declined to take questions about Trump’s strange response, telling reporters at a press conference Monday that it was “off-topic.”

This week, it got worse for Christie. On Tuesday, six New Jersey newspapers joined in an effort to call on Christie to resign for the state governorship.

“What an embarrassment. What an utter disgrace,” the papers wrote in a joint editorial. “For the good of the state, it’s time for Christie to do his long-neglected constituents a favor and resign as governor. If he refuses, citizens should initiate a recall effort.”
