Cooper Township Fire Chief Terry Emig told WZZM-TV Tuesday night at least five of the people who were struck died. Others were treated at area hospitals, according to local media reports.

At least eight people were hit, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.

The pickup’s driver fled on foot but was later arrested.

Markus Eberhard told WOOD-TV he had been fishing at the park and was leaving when someone yelled for him to watch out. The pickup nearly rolled over his foot, and before Eberhard could warn the bicyclists, they were hit, he said.

“I saw a bunch of bikes hit the front of his truck, and a couple of them flew,” he told the television station.

No further details were immediately available from authorities. The Associated Press left messages seeking comment from Emig, Matyas and state police.

Matyas responded only by saying a news conference was scheduled for late Tuesday night at the Kalamazoo Township Police Department.

The area is south of Grand Rapids.
