Sorry @realDonaldTrump, but @BarackObama is Twitter’s top cat – Washington Examiner
He’s not a big Twitter guy and hasn’t even clicked the “tweet” button in 7 days, but when compared to the “tweeter-in-chief,” former President Barack Obama is the social media platform’s king, not President Trump.
In a data deep dive, Pew Research Center has determined that 26% of U.S. adults on Twitter follow Obama, 19% Trump. They top U.S. politicians on the site.
But, said Pew, their analysis was more than just looking at the numbers posted on the Twitter profiles that show Obama with 107 million followers and Trump with 62 million followers, numbers that include lots for foreign accounts.
Pew also did a survey of users and was granted access to user information in a bid to focus on real U.S. followers.
Then it asked what those followers think and found political division: 54% of Trump followers approve of the president versus 24% who don’t follow the president.
And overall, the analysis said that just 22% of U.S. adults say they use Twitter, “and those who do tend to be younger and more Democratic than the overall public.”
- 31% of Republican adults and 13% of Democrats follow Trump.
- 38% of Democrats and 9% of Republicans follow Obama.
- 34% of adult U.S. Twitter users who say they have tweeted about politics in the last 30 days follow Trump, and 51% follow Obama.
- Sen. Bernie Sanders is the Democratic presidential candidate with the largest share of U.S. adult followers at 6%.
